Mumbai and Ahmedabad prove old money still runs India’s wealthiest districts

India’s financial capital remains one of the country’s richest districts in the 2026 rankings. For travellers, Mumbai district offers an unmatched mix of history, glamour, culture and food, with prime attractions including the Gateway of India, Marine Drive and Colaba, while Bollywood continues to attract international visitors each year.

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, secures a place further down the list, built on manufacturing, textiles and entrepreneurship. Travellers can explore its UNESCO-listed heritage neighbourhoods, the Gandhi Ashram, and colourful street-food markets.

Both cities sit alongside newer entrants driven by technology and services — Rangareddy (Hyderabad), Gurugram, Bengaluru Urban and Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida) — on a 2026 list based on district-level economic indicators and GDP-per-capita rankings, according to an analysis by Inframantra.

For travellers, the contrast is part of the appeal: Mumbai and Ahmedabad offer centuries of commercial history and heritage architecture, while districts like Gurugram and Bengaluru showcase glass towers and Fortune 500 campuses built almost entirely in the last three decades.
