MG Just Unveiled a Platform That Builds 4 Types of Cars on One Line

MG Motor India has unveiled ADAPT, a new platform that can build battery EVs, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and range-extender EVs on one common architecture.

JSW MG Motor India has unveiled a new platform capable of building four different kinds of electrified cars on a single line. The architecture, called ADAPT (Advance Drive Architecture Platform Technology), supports battery electric vehicles, conventional hybrids, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and range-extender EVs — what the company collectively calls new-energy vehicles, or NEVs — and is described by MG as India’s first multi-new-energy-vehicle platform.

The platform underpins a broader push at MG, where managing director Anurag Mehrotra says NEVs are now expected to account for nearly 80% of the company’s total sales this year, ahead of its own long-term target of 75%. Mehrotra told TOI that passenger vehicle EV penetration nationally had slipped below 4% at the start of 2026 but crossed 8% by June, as rising fuel prices and growing awareness of running-cost savings pushed more buyers toward electrified options.

‘Demand is not the challenge any more. The challenge is giving customers enough choice,’ Mehrotra said, pointing to the ADAPT platform as the company’s answer to that gap.

Among the models the new platform will support is MG’s first plug-in hybrid, due later this financial year and positioned as an alternative for buyers who would otherwise choose a diesel SUV. Mehrotra said a PHEV combines an EV’s low running costs with the reassurance of a petrol engine for longer trips, removing range anxiety while avoiding dependence on charging infrastructure — a technology widely used in China and Europe but yet to take off in India, where automakers have so far focused on either pure EVs or conventional hybrids.

MG’s move comes as the wider Indian EV market accelerates. Tata Motors remains the country’s largest electric passenger vehicle maker, with EVs making up around a fifth of its passenger vehicle sales, while Mahindra’s electric range contributed about 12% of its passenger vehicle volumes in June. Industry-wide, EV sales are growing at roughly 70%, well ahead of the broader passenger vehicle market.
