He almost got kidnapped in Medellin, so he built his life in Buenos Aires instead
AI founder Koby Conrad says he once nearly got kidnapped while visiting Medellin, but calls Buenos Aires one of the safest and most welcoming cities he has lived in.
Koby Conrad, the founder of AI sobriety companion Sunflower, is candid about the risks of relocating within Latin America. He acknowledged that safety can be a concern in parts of the region, recalling that he once nearly got kidnapped while visiting Medellín, Colombia.
Buenos Aires, he says, has been a different experience entirely. ‘Argentina is one of the safest places in Latin America,’ Conrad told Business Insider, adding that he finds people there friendly and feels comfortable living in the city.
Conrad, 32, moved from San Francisco after weighing New York and Buenos Aires as alternatives, drawn to Argentina’s culture, food and lower cost of living. ‘I love the food, I love the culture, and I love the fact that my rent is 10x cheaper,’ he said, adding that in San Francisco, even making $300,000 left him stressed about money, while in Buenos Aires, $100,000 feels like enough to be set.
He still travels to San Francisco regularly and is applying for a nomad visa in Argentina. His company now operates across both cities, with the technical team based in San Francisco and New York and the go-to-market team in Buenos Aires. Conrad said the quieter lifestyle there, supported by a full-time house manager, has helped him focus more on both his work and his growing family.
